Sterile & Surgical-Grade Catheter Lubricants

There are several types of lubricant jelly that are ideal for use with catheters. Surgilube, Cardinal Health Lubricating Jelly, McKesson Sterile Lubricating Jelly, are all excellent choices. You may also consider Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. All of these surgical-grade catheters will reduce friction upon insertion of the equipment into the urethra, which can be quite uncomfortable for some patients. Using an adequate amount of medical-grade lubricant can help make the process of inserting the catheter simpler and less painful for the patient. Traditional lubricants, like KY Jelly, for example, are not recommended for medical procedures such as catheter insertion. They may collect at the tip of the penis and cause a buildup. Instead, it is best to stick with medical-grade lubricants like the ones mentioned above.

Beyond this date, there is no guarantee the active ingredients are still working properly. The lubricant may still have the same viscosity but the effectiveness of the sterility of the product may be compromised. To avoid infection, always verify the expiration date prior to use. If the product has expired, toss and replace it with a new one.
